Learn to Read Speech
Do you wear Hearing Aids or a Cochlear Implant and still struggle to communicate?
Contrary to what many people think, Assistive Listening technologies do not restore hearing to a normal range in the same way that glasses correct vision. Other communication strategies such as speech reading skills will help to improve overall communication and enrich daily life.
About Speech Reading Classes, Also Known as Lip Reading
Often called ‘lip reading’, it is the ability to understand speech by observing visual cues such as the movement of the lips, tongue, jaw and facial expressions. Less than half of spoken language is actually visible on a speaker’s lips. Speech Reading is the more accurate term as it also involves observing other cues such as body language and gestures along with situational and context clues. It takes practice but it can also be very rewarding. Anyone with a hearing loss will greatly benefit from these classes.
Levels 1 and 2 Speach Reading Classes Available
The Canadian Hard of Hearing Association, Sudbury Branch currently offers Levels 1 and 2 of Speech Reading.
Each level consists of 10 classes that are each about 2 hours long. They are generally run weekly for 10 weeks or twice a week for 5 weeks. There is no fee.
